6 Critical Dont#8217;s for Your Resume

6 Critical Dont8217s for Your Resume 6 Critical Donts for Your Resume Keep in mind that a recruiter or hiring manager will likely review hundreds of resumes for a position that has been advertised. He or she is a busy person with a lot to do, and will be looking for any reason to disqualify a resume. If the recruiter cant find the things that he or she is looking for quickly, or notlageices things that dont have a place on a resume right off the bat, it is likely that the individual will quickly discard it.There are a few things that you must absolutely leave off of your resume, or ensure are not a pspecies of the resume that you present to your prospective employer. These include1. Dont use a nickname on your resume. Include only your legal name, of course that may be your middle name with a first initial, which is completely acceptable as long as that is your business name.2. Avoid trying to sound impressive by using a lot of fancy words. This is particularly if you dont really k now what the big words mean. This can end up insulting the recruiter and making you seem unprofessional or immature.3. Dont include any personal information. When I say personal, this includes the following race, age, gender, height, weight, health, physical appearance, religion, national origin, or marital status. None of these things is relevant and they can actually cause complications.4. Dont make demands. Avoid telling a prospective employer what you expect out of a position or what you want it to do for you. Speak only about what you can offer the company. It is not the responsibility of the company to continuously stimulate and challenge you, but rather your responsibility to provide yourself with challenges and continuously work toward your goals.5. Dont explain terminations, resignations or unemployment gaps. Its important that you do not discuss the reasons why you left your previous position or company or why there are underemployment gaps between jobs. These things shoul d be discussed during the interview, and you will have better opportunity to express yourself in person rather than just through words on a page. Besides, this takes up too much unnecessary space on your resume.6. When discussing your skills, avoid using long paragraphs and sentences. Use bullet points without any form of punctuation, and make sure that you remain consistent throughout the document. This will eliminate wordiness and help the reviewer get through the information quickly.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. Take our Recruiter Certification Program today. Here are the 12 daily habits of exceptional leaders

Here are the 12 daily habits of exceptional leadersHere are the 12 daily habits of exceptional leadersOne of the most popularDilbertcomic strips in the cartoons history begins with Dilberts anfhrer relaying senior leaderships explanation for the companys low profits. In response to his babo, Dilbert asks incredulously, So theyre saying that profits went up because of great leadership and down because of a weak economy? To which Dilberts boss replies, These meetings will go faster if you stop putting things in context.Great leadership is indeed a difficult thing to pin down and understand. You know a great leader when youre working for one, but even they can have a hard time explaining the specifics of what they do that makes their leadership so effective.Great leaders change us for the better. They binnenlandsee mora in us than we see in ourselves, and they help us learn to see it too. They dream big and show us all the great things we can accomplish.Great leadership is dynamic it me lds a variety of unique skills into an integrated whole. Great leadership is also founded in good habits. What follows are the essential habits that exceptional leaders rely on every day. Give them a try and see where they take your leadership skills.Effective communicationThe more elaborate our means of communication, the less we communicate.- Joseph PriestleyCommunication is the real work of leadership. Its a fundamental element of how leaders accomplish their goals each and every day. You simply cant become a great leader until you are a great communicator.Great communicators inspire people. They create a connection with their followers that is real, emotional, and personal, regardless of any physical distance between them. Great communicators forge this connection through an understanding of people and an ability to speak directly to their needs.CourageCourage is the first virtue that makes all other virtues possible. - AristotlePeople will wait to see if a leader is courageous before theyre willing to follow his or her lead. People need courage in their leaders. They need someone who can make difficult decisions and watch over the good of the group. They need a leader who will stay the course when things get tough. People are far more likely to show courage themselves when their leaders do the same. For the courageous leader adversity is a welcome test. Like a blacksmiths molding of a red-hot iron, adversity is a trial by fire that refines leaders and sharpens their game. Adversity emboldens courageous leaders and leaves them more committed to their strategic direction.Leaders who lack courage simply toe the company line. They follow the safest path- the path of least resistance- because theyd rather cover their backside than lead.Adherence to the Golden Rule +1The way you see people is the way you treat them, and the way you treat them is what they become. Jon Wolfgang von GoetheThe Golden Rule treat others as you want to be treated assumes that all pe ople are the same. It assumes that, if you treat your followers the way you would want a leader to treat you, theyll be happy. It ignores that people are motivated by vastly different things. One person loves public recognition, while another loathes being the center of attention.Great leaders dont treat people how they themselves want to be treated. Instead, they take the Golden Rule a step further and treat each person as he or she would like to be treated. Great leaders learn what makes people tick, recognize their needs in the moment, and adapt their leadership style accordingly.Self-awarenessIt is absurd that a man should rule others, who cannot rule himself. - Latin ProverbContrary to what Dilbert might have us believe, leaders gaps in self-awareness are rarely due to deceitful, Machiavellian motives, or severe character deficits. In most cases, leaders- like everyone else- view themselves in a more favorable light than other people do.Self-awareness is the foundation of emoti onal intelligence, a skill that 90% of top performing leaders possess in abundance. Great leaders high self-awareness means they have a clear and accurate image not just of their leadership style, but also of their own strengths and weaknesses. They know where they shine and where theyre weak, and they have effective strategies for leaning into their strengths and compensating for their weaknesses.PassionIf you just work on stuff that you like and are passionate about, you dont have to have a master plan with how things will play out. Mark ZuckerbergPassion and enthusiasm are contagious. So are boredom and apathy. No one wants to work for a boss thats unexcited about his or her job, or even one whos just going through the motions. Great leaders are passionate about what they do, and they strive to share that passion with everyone around them.HumilityHumility is not thinking less of yourself, its thinking of yourself less. C.S. LewisGreat leaders are humble. They dont allow their p osition of authority to make them feel that they are better than anyone else. As such, they dont hesitate to jump in and do the dirty work when needed, and they wont ask their followers to do anything they wouldnt be willing to do themselves.GenerosityA good leader is a person who takes a little more than his share of the blame and a little less than his share of the credit. - John MaxwellGreat leaders are generous. They share credit and offer enthusiastic praise. Theyre as committed to their followers success as they are to their own. They want to inspire all of their employees to achieve their personal best not just because it will make the team more successful, but because they care about each person as an individual.InfectiousnessThe very essence of leadership is that you have to have a vision. Its got to be a vision you articulate clearly and forcefully on every occasion. You cant blow an uncertain trumpet. - Reverend Theodore HesburghGreat leaders know that having a clear vis ion isnt enough. You have to make that vision come alive so that your followers can see it just as clearly as you do. Great leaders do that by telling stories and painting verbal pictures so that everyone can understand not just where theyre going, but what it will look and feel like when they get there. This inspires others to internalize the vision and make it their own.AuthenticityJust be who you are and speak from your guts and heart its all a man has. Hubert HumphreyAuthenticity refers to being honest in all things not just what you say and do, but who you are. When youre authentic, your words and actions align with who you claim to be. Your followers shouldnt be compelled to spend time trying to figure out if you have ulterior motives. Any time they spend doing so erodes their confidence in you and in their ability to execute.Leaders who are authentic are transparent and forthcoming. They arent perfect, but they earn peoples respect by walking their talk.ApproachabilityMana gement is like holding a dove in your hand. Squeeze too hard and you kill it, not hard enough and it flies away. Tommy LasordaGreat leaders make it clear that they welcome challenges, criticism, and viewpoints other than their own. They know that an environment where people are afraid to speak up, offer insight, and ask good questions is destined for failure. By ensuring that they are approachable, great leaders facilitate the flow of great ideas throughout the organization.AccountabilityThe ancient Romans had a tradition Whenever one of their engineers constructed an arch, as the capstone was hoisted into place, the engineer assumed accountability for his work in the most profound way possible He stood under the arch. Michael ArmstrongGreat leaders have their followers backs. They dont try to shift blame, and they dont avoid shame when they fail. Theyre never afraid to say, The buck stops here, and they earn peoples trust by backing them up.A sense of purposeYou dont lead by poin ting and telling people some place to go. You lead by going to that place and making a case. Ken KeseyWhereas vision is a clear idea of where youre going, a sense of purpose refers to an understanding ofwhyyoure going there. People like to feel like theyre part of something bigger than themselves. Great leaders give people that feeling.Bringing it all togetherBecoming a great leader doesnt mean that you have to incorporate all of these traits at once. Focus on one or two at a time each incremental improvement will make you more effective. Its okay if you act some of these qualities at first. The more you practice, the more instinctive it will become, and the more youll internalize your new leadership style. This article first appeared on LinkedIn.

How Personality Tests Can Work For You - The Muse

How Personality Tests Can Work For You - The MuseHow Personality Tests Can Work For YouIm a self-assessment junkie. Growing up, I lived for those quizzes that would tell you the perfect hairdo for your personality, or what to wear to prom based on your favorite band. I still sometimes spend an entire lunch break taking BuzzFeed quizzes that will tell me which version of Taylor Swift I am or which TV show I should live in. Even though I am aware that unterstellung are not scientific tests, tzu siches something appealing to me about this kind of self-discovery. When I learned, however, that there were assessments that could provide real value and help me find my perfect career path, I was thrilled. These questionnaires come in many shapes and sizes. Some look at your personality, others your aptitudes, still others your behaviors some tests look at all of these things combined. There are free versions of many and others available for purchase. Youve probably heard of some of them, such as the MBTI or the Strengths Finder. Maybe youve even taken one or more of these popular analyses and dont know what to make of the results can knowing your personality or how you think actually have any bearing on your career? I graduated armed with the knowledge that I was an INFJ based on the Myers-Briggs, my biggest strengths, Activator and Strategist, a Type 8 on the Enneagram scale, and my parachute wasmaybe grey? But despite all of these tests, I had no idea what I wanted to do. Id been expecting the results to magically unveil the one career that would make me happy, and because of that, Id failed to use the assessments as the tools that they actually are. It took my college career counselor several conversations to help me understand that personality-type tests cant redistribution policy hard work or self-reflection rather, theyre merely a tool to better understand ourselves and how we operate in our environment. With that new outlook, I was able to narrow down a sea of jo b titles in a way that reflected my skills and temperament. Before you jump into all the tests looking for the key to your career path, take a moment to ask yourself some preliminary questions about your personality. If you first think about the basics of your personality, youll be able to find the best choice in a vast number of tests out there. First things first 1. How Well Do You Know Yourself? Are you the type of person that likes to sit and think about your own personality, how youd react to different situations, or daydream about your place in the world? Then self-assessments are probably inherently attractive to you. If you havent already taken an MBTI- or if you took it so long ago that youve forgotten your results- its a great place to start. This one asks you to make an instinctive choice between two options, and from there, it helps you understand broadly the way you view the world. Do you find crowds energizing or draining? Do you prefer to explore the world or your inne r thoughts? Are you driven by feelings or by facts? While the results can help you get a sense of your worldview, they wont lead you down any one path. Thats for you to decide. Next question to ask 2. Do You Often Feel Lost or Anxious? If you tend to get overwhelmed by too many choices, a self-assessment might help you narrow down your career options and start to feel better about your strengths and where they might take you. If you dont know yourself that well, the MBTI is still a good starting place. I also like 16personalities.com because of its design and its section on careers. Another good beginner choice, particularly if you want to connect the results immediately to potential careers is the Strongs Interest Inventory, which helps organize your interests around specific career blocks. The test is grouped into six occupational areas rather than job titles (creative, realistic, social), and then provides examples of jobs in each area. You arent tied to any one path, but the Mye rs-Briggs plus the SII, taken together, can help you curate your choices and get you started. Its important to know how you fare with the following question, too. 3. Are You Goal-Oriented?Maybe you have a career and want to advance into a leadership position. Or, perhaps your job requires a lot of verbal presentations and you need to find a way to improve or maximize your communication skills. If youre goal-driven, and want to figure out a way to play to your strengths to advance your career, consider the Strengths Finder. This one was developed to identify your key strengths, thereby giving you strategies to use them effectively. More specific than the Myers-Briggs or the Interest Inventory, the Strengths Finder works best for people who already have a path in mind. Its also important to know 4. Are You a Test-Taker?While all assessments are designed to be tools to help you, it doesnt mean that you need to take all of them together. Taking all of the tests can produce contradictory results, and if you take enough, you might even start to recognize the difference between the answers that are authentic, and ones that produce the result you want. While thats impressive in its own way, gaming self-assessments to prove to yourself that youre the extraverted go-getter you want people to think you are isnt going to help you find career bliss. You can still take an assessment if you want to, but make sure that you are being honest in your answers, and try a test based in interests rather than psychoanalysis. How you answer the following question may help you determine which- if any- test to take 5. Are You a Skeptic? Not everyone needs to take a self-assessment to find his or her path, or to understand how his or her values and aptitudes contribute to her working life. Trying to force yourself to use tests if you truly dont want to will only hinder you. While understanding yourself is critical to choosing a career path, self-assessments arent the only way to do that. Keeping a journal, practicing meditation, talking to friends and family, and simply being aware of what you like, value, and prioritize are all ways to mentally check in with yourself and see if youre on the path thats right for you right now (remembering that things may change down the line). If you want to try one, great Go into it with an open mind, and remember that no analysis can tell you what to do with your life. Use the tools as a way to better understand yourself and how your interests and skills might lead to a fulfilling career. Just dont let yourself get locked into something you might not want- because a test told you to. You are the best interpreter of yourself, and only you can decide what path to take. Engineergirl.org Draws Girls to STEM

Engineergirl.org Draws Girls to STEM Engineergirl.org Draws Girls to STEM Engineergirl.org Draws Girls to STEM The National Academy of Engineering launched the EngineerGirl website in 2001 in an effort to draw middle school girls to the field of engineering. It welches meant to be an online presence to help girls understand engineering, what engineers do, and how it matters to daily life, says Simil Raghavan, the academys program officer, and a biological engineer, who manages the site. But the internet has changed enormously since then. A simple website is elend enough to entice viewers, to say nothing of steering them to specific careers. An essay competition and QA sessions were added to make the site mora interactive, but the website was still not reaching as many girls as Raghavan and her team thought it could. The kind of traffic they were seeing suggested a new course of action.Image EngineerGirlOver the past few years, even though the site is targeted to middle school girls, a lot of visitors are from high schools, Raghavan says. Maybe middle school girls were spending less time on the internet. Maybe the high school girls already knew a little more about engineering and might be able to share their knowledge. So the Ambassadors program is an attempt to bring those two groups together, Raghavan says. For You 7 Ways to Move Up the Ladder with a STEM DegreeTo become an ambassador, high school girls living in the U.S. must submit a proposal about how they intend to reach younger girls in their community. The students will also need an adult sponsor to help them carry out their mission. Raghavan and her colleagues will select five or six entrants to put their ideas in motion. Each project will be offered $250 in funding (and projects that might need more will be assisted with fundraising). As they proceed, the high schoolers will report to EngineerGirl about how their projects are developing. Then well work with them at crafting a final report so they have a re cord of what theyve done, and be able to champion it, says Raghavan. There will be web conferences throughout the year and the final report will be published on EngineerGirl.org. The selected students will also be funded to attend the Society of Women Engineers Annual Conference. The student that has made the biggest impact will be awarded a $1000 scholarship. The program is specifically looking for projects that attempt to reach girls that wouldnt otherwise be reached.Certain communities have access to STEM and other communities dont, says Raghavan. The best projects will be the ones that explain the need We are going to do something that will help girls that would not otherwise be involved in engineering. Or maybe someone says My community has this great STEM program, but all the people attending are boys. I want to make sure we get a group of girls. I dont know how that would work, but thats the advantage of having the girls work where they arethey live there. So far, the entrants h ave followed the suggestions of the website, proposing that they work with the Girl Scouts, start a STEM club at the local library, and start engineer clubs at schools. I was surprised by how many freshman are applying, Raghavan says. Theyve been to summer camps and have had some exposure to engineering. And they have strong recommendations. This summer, EngineerGirl will pick the winning projects. If they are as effective as hoped, Raghavan and her colleagues have every intention of expanding the program. Needless to say, theres work to be done before then. This is the very first year, Raghavan says, so there are a lot of moving parts.Michael Abrams is an independent writer.Read MoreCreative Teaching Prepares Students for EngineeringAn Engineering Education Should Never EndNew Skills for the New World of Engineering For Further DiscussionThe best projects will be the ones that explain the need We are going to do something that will help girls that would not otherwise be involved in e ngineering. Air Force Basic Training Initial Uniform Issue

Air Force Basic Training Initial Uniform IssueAir Force Basic Training Initial Uniform IssueTwo or three days after arrival at Air Force Basic Military Training (AFBMT), youll be marched to the troop supply area, where you will receive your initial uniform issue. The word from several recent basic training graduates is that this process is no fun at all. It seems that the kind folks who work there are not very kind. In fact, most recent graduates describe these folks as mean as hell. In any event, you will be sized using a scientific method (theyll look at you and say, you wear a medium. However, you are required to try everything on before youre finished. Once youve gotten your issue, youll place everything into the duffle bag and leave. You would think it would make sense to march straight back to the dormitory, and put everything away in inspection order. No, that wouldnt make the T.I.s happy. Instead, youll be marched to your next appointment that day, having to march in formation while carrying that heavy duffle bag. In fact, youll carry that duffle bag with you the rest of the morning (or afternoon if you had an afternoon uniform issue). Once you finally get your new belongings back to the dormitory, youre not ready to put them away, yet. Everything has to be stenciled with your information (last name and your recruit number). That way, theres no fighting over whos hat belongs to who, and things wont get lost when they are washed (well, actually things always get lost when th ey are being washed). 7 Ways to Improve Your Time Management Skills

7 Ways to Improve Your Time Management Skills7 Ways to Improve Your Time Management Skills In todays workplace, weve all got a million and one things to do. How, exactly, are you supposed to balance them all- and still clock out at fewer than, say, 60 hours a week? Youd have to seriously hone your time-management skills to do it. And to find out how, we turned to the people who we know have a lot on their plates CEOs. Heres what they (and other big bosses) think you can do to best manage your time. Its a clich, but you can make yourself a morning person . If youre passionate about what you do, you can get yourself out of bed. You only need to wake up at 6 a.m. every day to find new time which can be amazingly productive, and by doing those essential morning tasks before 7a.m.- like responding to urgent, overnight schmelzglass, catching up on the latest industry news, and coordinating your calendar- you can take advantage of the rest of the world sleeping and comp lete those tasks without interruption. - Jack Barmby, Founder and CEO of GnattaI keep to-do list of short-term and long-term goals that Im constantly shuffling around. Having a birds eye view of my responsibilities allows me to make quick decisions about whats next. Being flexible about your priorities and responding quickly when they need to change is important. - Kelsey Doorey, founder and CEO of Vow To Be ChicThe first thing I do when I get up in the morning is I dont get angeschlossen and I dont open my email. If I do, Im lost for the rest of the day. Instead, I make a to-do list for the day , usually yesterdays notes and memory. Then I prioritize that list- I mark whats urgent, what must be done by end of day, and what can wait. Then I get started. - Niki Radisic, founder of Krazy Fish Make time for yourself to recharge and re-prioritize. Im the first one to admit that while the number of responsibilities outweighs the minutes of the day by many multipliers and how important yet difficult it is to juggle them all successfully, Ive become more conscious of the need to take the time to keep myself at my peak. By focusing on the here and now- such as turning off my phone when focusing on my family- and keeping myself healthy, and constantly re-prioritizing, I can be at my best to help everyone else reach their highest purpose and potential. - Daniel Cane, CEO of Modernizing Medicine and co-founder of Blackboard, Inc.Take time to sharpen your ax- by which I mean, actually take the time to rest. I am a recovering workaholic who used to put in 15 hour days seven days a week, always thinking there was something else that I could do to be more effective. Little did I know that this was very inefficient. These days, I recommend doing a fully focused 50-minute sprint on your one task at hand, and then after that all-out assault, take 10 minutes up and away from your work area standing up and moving around and not worrying about work at all. Th is makes it easier to plot your day into hour intervals, but also keeps you and your team going strong. - alexanderplatz Moen, cofounder and president of Match Made Coffee 4. Take advantage of your travel time. Every train, plane, or Uber you take is a chance to get some quality alone time to push things through. Whether its following up with people youve just met or some crucial product planning, take advantage of being away from your laptop to get things done. Also, if this is the window you need to sing happy birthday to a close friend down the phone, dont be embarrassed to do so. You can even ask the Uber driver to join in. - Jack Barmby, Founder and CEO of GnattaThe most important time management strategy I use is to maximize my down time. When Im on a plane, train, bus or boat, I am working on offline work that is important to my business. I save offline work for those trips and get it out of the way. Because I am in one spot and cant do much else, I am less distr acted and get some of my best work done. - Kean Graham, CEO of MonetizeMoreIve found the best way to accomplish everything I need to in a day is to eat the frog. Eating the frog is doing a hard task you are dreading. It keeps you from putting it off and when you finish, its easy to carry that momentum to your easier tasks. I started getting twice as much done every day once I implemented this. - Max Page, founder of U.S. based CouponHippoGet the things you hate to do completed first. Stop putting things off until tomorrow or the next day. Get the calls, the reports, the meeting with the nasty client all out of the way first and the remainder of the day is easier. So if you have several things planned, look at your list to start the day and begin with those things that are most difficult, time consuming, or simply a pain in the neck. No one likes doing expense reports, calling difficult clients, or calling past-due clients but when you conduct these difficult tasks first, the day will go much easier. - Drew Stevens, CEO of Orca CommunicationsWhen I set to start my business, I became the accountant, administrative assistant, project manager, writer, business developer, and co-boss. That felt crushingly overwhelming because I always had something to do. To save myself from becoming a scatterbrained mess, I began practicing time blocking. Each day, I block out 30-minute to one-hour chunks of time to focus on one task- emphasis on one. That way, I can concentrate on one thing and do it well without getting distracted and ultimately doing a poor job across the board. - Caroline Maurer, cofounder of Witty Kitty Set timers and give yourself a limited amount of time to accomplish some tasks. That way you dont let yourself get caught in the perfection cycle and let one task take your whole day. Figure out what a reasonable amount of time is for that task, set the timer, and work fast so you get it done in time or early. - Kimberly Giles, president a nd CEO of Claritypoint Coaching and Identiology Inc.Its important to manage distractions. Happily, open floor plans are starting to go out of style, which is good because they were always disastrous for work that requires high concentration. But if you need to protect your physical space, do so. If you need to talk to your coworkers about what the appropriate times to interrupt you are, do so. And manage your electronic interruptions too. Do away with the mobile notifications. Set your email client to check manually, so you can set times for inbox-clearing, rather than having it rule your day. - William Gadea, founder of IdeaRocket
